Wondering what a kitchen remodel by Terra Mia can do for your home? We were delighted to share the results of the transformation of this Las Vegas kitchen with the homeowners—and we want to share them with you, too!
One thing that our clients were sure about was wanting to open the space up to make it feel brighter and more welcoming. That meant removing the blocky framing around the central counterspace. Those pillars may have provided a tiny bit of extra storage space, but they made the entire kitchen feel smaller and more cramped.
Removing that extra construction allowed us to install a free-standing, spacious kitchen island that better served these homeowner’s lifestyle by encouraging entertaining and family connection. And, no need to worry about the lost cabinet space, as this island provides plenty of storage below.
Not only was it important to open up the kitchen to the living room, but we also wanted to rearrange the cooking flow in this space. By moving the stovetop range to the island, for instance, we could ensure that anyone cooking still has a view directed towards the rest of the living space instead of the wall. The center island is even spacious enough for a farmhouse sink, so that prep and clean-up can be done while chatting with family members or watching television.
In order to achieve the new layout, we had to make sure to properly install the right infrastructure for gas lines, electrical wiring, and pipes. But, the extra effort was so worth it to make this kitchen feel more connected to the rest of the home.
There’s no doubt that the kitchen cabinets in this Las Vegas home were well-built, but they made the space feel dated and dark.
And in thinking of replacements, we know that we wanted cabinets that would:
As such, we opted for tall, shaker style white cabinets with clear windows for the top row and sleek silver hardware throughout. This gives the kitchen a timeless feel while highlighting the airiness and openness of the new layout.
The countertops in this kitchen were a black speckled quartz that was popular when they were installed, but have since gone out of style. That being said, we didn’t want to go with a white or light gray replacement as that would wash out the space. By installing matte black natural stone countertops, we were able to achieve the perfect contrast while creating a sense of modern elegance.
With the smooth countertops, sleek hardware, and clean lines of the shaker style cabinets, we did want to make sure to add in some texture to keep things interesting! This kitchen’s new backsplash helps to provide depth to the space without overpowering the other design features.
Appliance upgrades, including a new refrigerator, dishwasher, and microwave were another great way to modernize this kitchen and make cooking more enjoyable for this Las Vegas family. We also installed a stainless steel drop hood over the center island to give the space a professional aesthetic. To be sure, a powerful ventilation system is also helpful to ensure that cooking aromas, steam, and smoke don’t overpower the living area.
This kitchen featured tile flooring that was practical and durable, but not in line with the homeowner’s vision for the space. Plus, keeping the grout clean in this part of the home was a constant chore with everyday spills!
With an open layout like in this home, we wanted the flooring to help delineate the kitchen area from the living area. Temperature- and water-resistant flooring in a dark color was the perfect way to add visual layers to the space without interrupting the open layout.
One of our favorite things about working with clients is getting to know how our remodel will enhance their life. This family, for instance, wanted to incorporate a workspace alongside their kitchen to make working from home more convenient! We made sure that this area fit in seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen remodel by installing the same shaker-style cabinets, backsplash, and beautiful countertops. And, we added in important details such as a comfortable work chair and electrical outlets for laptops, tablets, and more.
We can absolutely envision this homeowner starting off the work day while coffee is brewing or getting into the workflow while a hearty soup is simmering on the stove.
One thing that we like to point out in before and after comparisons of a kitchen remodel are the elements we opted to keep. After all, not everything needs to be gutted and replaced in a renovation project!
In this project, for example, we didn’t touch the windows at all. They are the perfect size and placement to bring in natural light to this kitchen, and the shutter-style blinds add charm that perfectly aligns with the new aesthetic.
We also kept the placement of the overhead lights, and didn’t replace or move the dining table. We also loved that these homeowners used their available counter space to display fruits, flowers, cutlery, and small appliances, so we made sure that the new design would allow them to continue this practice.
